Symposium Best Poster Award Goes to Aubrey Davis of UC San Diego

Don Smith of UC Santa Cruz engages Aubrey Davis in a lively discussion of her research at the Long Beach Symposium.
Aubrey Davis, a doctoral student at UC San Diego, was presented the Best Poster Award at the TSR&TP Symposium in Long Beach April 5-6, 2002. Davis' project, titled Cell Surface Proteins Induced by Copper Toxicity in the Marine Diatoms Thalassiosira pseudonana and Cylindrotheca fusiformis, is focused on developing a bioassay for detecting stress in coastal marine organisms resulting from copper pollution.

In addition to the Best Poster Award, three honorable mention awards (see below) were given to Laurel Schaider of UC Berkeley, Mark Shimazu of UC Riverside, and Karen Murray of UC San Diego.

Posters were evaluated for scientific content, creativity, and their ability to communicate science to a broad audience. Davis was given a $500 travel award to be used for collaborations at another UC campus or National Lab, or for presenting her research at a scientific meeting.

New TSR&TP Associate Directors

Beginning in July 2002, the TSR&TP will have three new Associate Directors: Marion Miller of UC Davis, John Knezovich of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and Tom Harmon of UC Los Angeles. Each brings a history of TSR&TP involvement and unique interests to their new position. Marion Miller is a Professor and Chair of Environmental Toxicology at UC Davis and has formerly served on the TSR&TP Executive Committee. John Knezovich was an active TSR&TP Executive Committee member from 1996 to 2000 and currently directs the Center for Accelerator Mass Spectrometry at LLNL. Tom Harmon is a Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering and was previously involved with the TSR&TP's lead campus at UCLA for several years. All three Associate Directors will continue efforts to increase the visibility of the TSR&TP throughout the UC system.
