2006 Grants and Fellowships Awarded

The TSR&TP has awarded ten new graduate fellowships and two new investigator grants for 2006-07. View a list and abstracts of funded projects.

New Lead Campus in Nanotoxicology

A new lead campus program in nanotoxicology based at UC Los Angeles and UC Santa Barbara will begin July 1, 2006. The program is led by UCLA School of Medicine Professor Andre Nel and will focus on research and training to develop scientists able to address toxicological, risk assessment and regulatory issues unique to nanomaterials.

Toxics Directory Launched

In May, TSR&TP launched the Toxics Directory, a searchable directory of UC faculty and researchers with expertise in toxic substances. There are already over 100 listings and more are being added each day. Please visit the site to update your information or add yourself to the directory.

New Internship Program

The TSR&TP has a new internship program for UC undergraduate and graduate students to gain experience in industry, state agencies and non-profit organizations. Internships are currently available with Chevron Energy Technology Company in Richmond and are being developed with biotechnology companies, pharmaceutical companies, state agencies and others.

Best Publication Awards

A new competition for the top 6 publications produced by TSR&TP affiliates was announced this spring. The deadline for this year's competition was June 1. Nominations will be reviewed by the TSR&TP Executive Committee and winners of the $500 awards will be posted on the website this summer. This will become a yearly competition and the next round will be posted in early 2007.

Peter Bui Wins Best Poster Award at TSR&TP 19th Symposium

Best Poster Winner Peter Bui at the San Diego Symposium

Peter Bui, a doctoral student in the Toxic Mechanisms lead campus program at UC Los Angeles won the Best Poster Award at the 19th Annual TSR&TP Symposium in San Diego for his poster Functional Characterization of Human and Mouse Novel Cytochrome P450, CYP2S1. Bui received an engraved iPod Nano and a $500 travel award for presenting his research at a scientific meeting. Two runners-up also received iPod shuffles: UC Riverside doctoral student Wendy Hwang-Verslues for her poster Tumor Suppressor p53 Down Regulates the Expression of Hepatocyte Nuclear Factor-4alpha (HNF4a), and UCLA doctoral student Matthew Jackson for his project Nitroxyl (HNO) Inhibits Catalase and Glutathione Peroxidase, Purified and in Raw 264.7 Cells, Slowing the Catabolism of Hydrogen Peroxide.

The winners will be invited to the 2007 Symposium in Santa Cruz to give oral presentations of their research.

Mark Your Calendars: 20th Annual Symposium in Santa Cruz April 20-21, 2007

The 20th Annual TSR&TP Research Symposium will be held April 20-21, 2007 at the Chaminade in Santa Cruz. All faculty and students funded by the TSR&TP in 2006-07 will be invited to attend and present posters. The general public is also welcome to attend. Detailed information will be posted in January.
