Oltean, winner of the first TSR&TP Best Poster Award at the 2001 Symposium,
was invited to speak on her TSR&TP supported research at the Society for
Invertebrate Pathology international meeting in the Netherlands in August
2001. The TSR&TP award included a $500 prize to present her research at
a scientific meeting.
The meeting focused on the role of bacteria, viruses, fungi, nematodes and
protozoa in invertebrate pathogenesis. This year marked the 100th anniversary
of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) in Japan and the 25th anniversary of the discovery
of a mosquitocidal Bt strain in Israel. Oltean, whose research focuses on
the mechanism of toxicity of Bt crystal proteins against insect pests, was
invited to give a 30 minute presentation in a symposium at the meeting called
"Novel receptors for Bacillus thuringiensis toxins". Bt-based insecticides
have served important roles as biological insect control agents for agricultural
pests and vectors of human diseases such as mosquitoes.
"TSR&TP funding helped tremendously to complete experiments for my
PhD dissertation", says Oltean. " I was honored to have the program
recognize the importance of our research that was recently published in the
Journal of Biological Chemistry."
Oltean is a UC Riverside doctoral student in Environmental Toxicology, supported
by the TSR&TP's lead campus program in Mechanisms of Toxicity.
