Coastal Toxicology Component of UC TSR&TP Held Annual Retreat at Bodega Marine Lab
The Coastal Toxicology Lead Campus Component of the TSR&TP held its annual retreat at Bodega Marine Laboratory on September 27-29, 1996. Sixty-five faculty and students representing the six UC campuses and laboratories involved in this multicampus component attended and participated in the retreat. The overall objective of this component is to help resolve pollution-related environmental problems in California's aquatic ecosystems. This is accomplished by facilitating faculty research on appropriate issues, and by providing students with research support and training opportunities in environmental toxicology. Graduate student trainees from each participating campus gave research project presentations. There were two additional invited presentations. Dr. Don Smith, assistant professor at UC Santa Cruz and a former trainee with the Coastal Toxicology Program, gave a special presentation on the impact of his experiences on his professional development and current research. Dr. Harvey Molotch, UC Santa Barbara, gave the second invited presentation entitled "Toxicology and Sociology". His talk focused on the importance of integrating the scientific understanding and knowledge of toxic substances with policy, economic and other societal issues. The remainder of the retreat consisted of brainstorming and strategy sessions for developing research themes such as enhancing expertise in bioremediation/restoration, solidfying the involvement of several new campus groups, increasing involvement in issues related to non-point sources of pollutants, and continuing development of new collaborations with other TSR&TP lead campus components and the new environmental management school at UC Santa Barbara.
